Today's person in black history

Dr. CARTER g. wOODSON

Dr. Carter G. Woodson - The Founder of Black History Month. Black History Month in its beginnings was only a week (Negro History Week). It was the week of President Abraham Lincoln's and Frederick Douglas' Birthday. It was later made into a month in 1969 after his death.

- Carter G. Woodson was born in 1875 in New Canton, Virginia. One of the first African Americans to receive a doctorate from Harvard, Woodson dedicated his career to the field of African-American history and lobbied extensively to establish Black History Month as a nationwide institution. He also wrote many historical works, including the 1933 book The Mis-Education of the Negro. Woodson lobbied schools and organizations to participate in a special program to encourage the study of African-American history, which began in February 1926 with Negro History Week. The program was later expanded and renamed Black History Month. (Woodson had chosen February for the initial week long celebration to honor the birth months of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln.) He died in Washington, D.C., in 1950

Celebrate Black History Month with District 27/28 and Sarasota Masonic Lodge at their Annual Black History Month Breakfast.  Tickets are $10.00. For more information, please contact Maurice D. Wilson 941-225-1962
